Circle J: Year of the Goat

circIts been a while since we’ve heard anything new from Holland’s Circle J, so its great to get something new in the form of the seven track, Year of the Goat, mini-album. Again, no surprises here just good ol’ Celtic-punk with a European flair. Hopefully, Year of the Goat, helps Circle J expand their profile outside the low countries as they are a band that deserve to be heard. Fans of…….(honestly, do i really need to do the list?)…..should check this out.

and if you speak Dutch check this 10 part rockumentary

Shite’n’Onions Podcast#68

Shite’n’Onions Podcast#68 – We’ll take a break from our history of Ireland series with this podcast and spin some tracks from recently received CDs and a few of old ones.

Blood Or Whiskey – Frank
A great track from the bands 2nd album – No Time to Explain. Don’t know who Frank is and I don’t fancy finding out.

The Authority!-If I Should Fall From Grace With God
From the Scene Kill 2 compilation. Know nothing about these guys but it’s a killer street punk cover of The Pogues – If I Should Fall From Grace With God

Charm City Saints – Dicey Riley
From the bands debut full length – Hooligans & Saints. Fist pumping, Punk’n’Pipes from the mean streets of Baltimore.

Nogoodnix – Untimely Blessings
From 2001’s Pub Punks United. The band only made one album but if you can track it down its worth the effort and the $$$

JackDaw – Hogjaw
Another great band that is no more – AC/DC meets Celtic punk from the mean and cold streets of Buffalo.

The Mahones – The Amsterdam Song
Finny’s tribute to Amsterdam. The Mahones will be around for ever…..God willing.

Circle J – Molly Maguires
From a couple of year back from Amsterdam’s Circle J, we have a tribute to the Irish miners of the 1800 who didn’t take any shit from the bosses. The album is Weekend Warriors

Handsome Young Strangers – Jog Along Til Shearing
From the HYS’s new EP. Don’t know what it is the put in the water or is it the Fosters but I’ve never heard a bad band from Auss and that goes for Handsome Young Strangers. 100% Aussie.

In Search Of A Rose – Shamrocknroll
German Celtic-folk-punk. Familiar melody? I’ll let you tell me.

Gerard Smith – Cruiscin Lan
Per-Bill Grogans Goat from Gerard Smith. The loudest player in Celtic rock.

Uncle Hamish & The Hooligans – Fanfare (For The Common Scotsman)
John Bowles described them as “sticking Genesis and Enter The Haggis in a blender and adding a extra pinch of The Sandcarvers”. I’d be happy just to put Phil Collins in a blender (feet first of course just to watch the expression on his face)

Prydein – Devil’s In the Kitchen
From the mean streets of Vermont (if there are streets there)

The Krusty Moores – Highwayman
German based / Irish fronted and Moores rhymes with Whor….

Black Friday – Mason Apron & Drowsy Maggy
From Cornwall, the only band we’ve ever featured that is in the Guinness Book of World Records. Everyone else is just in the Guinness.

Blackwater Jukebox – Carousel
“– sourced from a Carpathian Romani wedding anthem known as “Janissary Hora.” Based on an Ottoman fanfare popular amongst dervishes and death squads.”

The Bog Hoppers – Die Hard
From Seattle and not a plaid shirt in sight (or shite). From the album TOP SHELF

The Best of 2012

The Best of 2012:

1 Joint) The Radiators From Space: Sound City Beat

Dublin ‘s original punks masterful tribute to the long forgotten beginnings of rock music in Ireland, 60’s beat and garage given a ’77 style kick up the arse. Not exactly Celtic punk but there wouldn’t be any Celtic punk with out these guys (or U2 but we won’t hold that against them) and main man Philip Chevron is a Pogue as is guest Terry Woods. Henry McCullough also guests (he of the guitar on Joe Cockers, A Little Help From My Friends, at Woodstock)

1 Joint) The Mahones: Angels and Devils

21+ years on the go and The Mahones keep it alive and screaming and as authentic as fu#k. While the band may not as of yet have had the level of success of some of those who followed in their wake, Angels and Devils, puts to rest any doubt who the true masters of Celtic-punks are (and Finny can write a nice mushie love song as well)

Circle J: Diggers

Digger’s is the new 5 track EP from one of my favorite bands of the last few years – Circle J from the Netherlands. If you haven’t had the pleasure then these lads can be best described as holding the musical middle ground somewhere between (old) Flogging Molly and Norway’s Greenland Whalefishers and they hold that ground very, very well. No surprises, no frills just straight ahead rowdy Celtic’punk’n’roll and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Highlight (amongst many)? The Legend of Robert Morgan.
